ARTAID is collaborating with Lucky Mlotsa, an artist based in East Swaziland. Lucky works as an artist to help support his family, his sister and her two grandchildren. He told me that his mother was furious with him when he started painting. She couldn’t see how he could ever support himself or his family. Now, not only does he support his family by painting but for the past 15 years he has been teaching art and music free of charge to kids from his local community. Out in the most rural part of Swaziland Lucky has built, with support from several organizations, a centre where children can come to learn and appreciate the arts.
Lucky is helping us tell the story of HIV in Swaziland using his craft. We want to get his students to create a piece describing what HIV means to them. So far we have donated materials to get the project off the ground. Once we see the project develop we will donate more art materials.  We really look forward to seeing the work Lucky and his students create.
