December 19, 2015
On December 10 we published a story about Gugulethu Mashaba (Gugu). She had just buried her 5 year old brother, Melusi and being a double orphan and at the age of just 24 finds herself the head of a family of 11.
Once a grade A student and with dreams of becoming a nurse, Gugu is now mother to 7 younger siblings and 4 children.
Well the good news is, that come January, Gugu is going to return to school to finish form 4 and 5 with the goal of continuing to study for her nursing degree. With support from an aunt and S.O.H.O to help with the kids while she studies, we have agreed to cover her school fees. After spending some time together yesterday and chatting about her new school she said “I promise I’m going to pass. I am confident”. The strength with which she delivered those words I will never forget. I count myself very lucky to have met Gugu and to be able to tag along in what is going to be a tough but hugely rewarding journey.
